Several years ago, my mom and I were packing up my basement for an upcoming move. I was in the zone of throwing away every useless memento and long-forgotten souvenir that our children couldn’t live without at the time when I came across an old newspaper. I wondered why a lonely newspaper had been saved and upon opening it I began reading the front-page headline story. It was about two brothers who owned a home- building company that were being indicted for some type of indiscretion. Still wondering why I saved the newspaper, it dawned on me that it was dated March 13, 1989, my first-born’s birthday. As I was thinking what a terrible mother I am for not saving the newspaper of my other children’s birthdays, the doorbell rang.
I found myself sprinting up the stairs, happy to see my husband answering the door because I was in heavy-duty work mode and still wearing my holey pajama from days before. Standing at the front door was one of the brother’s from the newspaper article. I couldn’t even pretend to contain myself, and I must have looked like a complete idiot, but I told my husband I needed to speak with him immediately. I showed both he and my mom the newspaper as we all stood in complete and utter amazement.
What in the world had just happened? What are the chances that I open an 18-year-old newspaper and the man on the front-page headline is standing at my front door all these years later? What was that? Coincidence? No, I believe it is the same thing that happens to all of us such as when you are thinking of someone and the phone rings and that person is on the line. Or when you have been looking for something for weeks on end, and it shows up out of nowhere.
Gary Zukav, spiritual teacher calls these happenings non-physical reality/multi-sensory perception. He says most people only believe the five-sensory reality — that which we can experience only through our sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste. Yet he and other spiritual experts profess that multi-sensory perception — those signs that show up in the form of insight, hunches, synchronicities, dreams, coincidences, intuition, gut feelings and inspirations — are every bit as real as five-sensory reality. In fact, Zukav contends they are personal guidance systems supporting you in the direction of your “well-being”. However, because of our lack of understanding and trust, we are afraid to follow it.
Deepak Chopra, a renowned authority on spirituality, suggest that waking up and being present to these multi-sensory signs is vital to help take us out of our thinking mode and into the only thing that is real, which is the present moment. He says we need to acknowledge that the past is a perception of our earlier experiences and the future is a prediction and the present is all that is truly existent.
This is significant to me because I believe fully that we are the creator of our experiences. If we only see life through the lens of our “crazy” fear-based narrative that is constantly playing in our thoughts, then we will attract and create that fear into our lives. Instead, we must open to the wonder of each moment. Are you ready to stop living a fear-based life and want to open the door to infinite possibilities? Are you ready to create experiences that will make your life more purposeful and meaningful?
If so, I encourage you to begin the process by first playing with the idea of multi-sensory perception and instead of chalking it up to coincidences, begin keeping track of how often it happens. If you are like me, you find yourself giggling to yourself every time it happens. Next, surrender to the idea that you are a part of something bigger than yourself and you have an intuitive guidance system that is wiser than you can possibly perceive. Finally, TRUST it and enjoy knowing that you will never go wrong with allowing the information from your multi-sensory perception to help navigate and guide your life. Remember, we won’t always be able to connect meaning to those multi-sensory moments at the time. I firmly believe that there are things we know, and there are things we know we don’t know. However, there are also things we don’t know that we don’t know. Be confident that the Universe has brought it to you for a reason that for the time being is beyond our knowing. Life is a mystery…Right!
