The Link Between Anxiety & Depression

Depression is characterized by symptoms of hopelessness, sadness and fatigue, but there is another feeling experienced by nearly half of those with depression: anxiety. Anxiety  is characterized by excessive uneasiness, often accompanied by compulsive behavior or panic attacks.

Scientists believe there may be a biological link between depression and anxiety due to neurochemicals and pathways in the brain that trigger negative emotional states. Another link is that the symptoms of some anxiety disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive behavior and chronic worry, may lead to distressing patterns that then elicit depression.

Both anxiety and depression involve harmful perceptions about one’s self and the world. The tendency to exaggerate negative events that happened in the past or that might happen in the future can quickly lead to feelings of fear and despair that prevent sufferers from being present in their day-to-day lives.

Tips to Manage Depression & Anxiety

If you are experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety, a licensed therapist can help you separate the two conditions and make a treatment plan that addresses both. Through individual counseling, a therapist can help you identify possible themes, patterns and obstacles that are negatively affecting your thoughts and behaviors – increasing self-awareness and accountability so you can work to address specific symptoms.
